Pictured above and left, DELTA RIVERS NATURE CENTER is the first of eight nature centers built in Arkansas by the state’s Game and Fish Commission. The visitor center, modeled on a waterfowl hunting lodge, is situated on 130 acres of bottomland between Lake Langhofer and Black Dog Bayou. Inside, visitors will discover a 20,000-gallon aquarium that replicates the underwater environment of an oxbow lake with a diverse population of native fish. Other exhibits include preserved specimens of birds, mammals and reptiles; displays that tell the history of The Delta, the changing characteristics of our rivers and the importance of our wetlands. There are also exhibits for hunting and fishing. Children love climbing onboard a vintage “biplane” and flying over various areas of The Delta as they learn about the wildlife and habitat.
Outdoors, visitors can observe feeding of fish, alligators and birds, including eagles; explore the fora and fauna of Jefferson County on four trails, ranging in length from an easy, quarter-mile paved walking trail to the three-quarter-mile primitive trail designed for hiking enthusiasts. All the trails offer splendid opportunities to see beautiful wildflowers (no picking, please) and various forms of wildlife at work and play in their natural habitat.

Take a look at a mode of transportation that never leaves the ground. The ARKANSAS RAILROAD MUSEUM, permanent home of steam engine 819, a 4-8-4 Northern-type locomotive that was the last built at the Pine Bluff yard. Along with the 1909 Baldwin-built 336, both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and both are housed at the Arkansas Railroad Museum. The collection includes several rare diesel locomotives, a complete steam wrecker train, cabooses, a snow plow and other examples from the railroad era of yesteryear.
Also housed in the vast structure are collections of railroad memorabilia and a working scale-model railroad layout.
Pine Bluff offers a variety of lodging options. We recommend these properties for the high standards that you expect to find at nationally branded hotels and suites and for their convenient access from the airport.
The museum is open Monday through Saturday, 9:00AM until 2:00PM. (Hours may be curtailed during extreme outdoor temperatures.) Call ahead for special guided tours. Location is 1700 Port Road, just off U.S. Highway 65B. Phone 870.535.8819 or visit the official website.
★★★★★“Jimmy and Daniel took great care of my airplane while I stored it at PBF for a week. I couldn't have asked for a better overall experience. I also hear that the food at the restaurant is excellent, but didn't have a chance to try it.”
